TKO recognizes that we are navigating health safety challenges we have never seen before.  With guidance from safety experts, medical ADVISORS and RECOMMENDATIONS from our land manager partners, we are engaging in limited in-person volunteer activities with a keen eye towards safe, healthy practices.

Wahkeena Falls Trail Party

June 29, 2019 at 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Crew Leader:  Alison Nichols
Hike Distance: 6-7 miles roundtrip
Elevation Gain: 1500′
Hike Difficulty: Hard
Work Difficulty: Easy
Work Description: Restoration of tread width and improve drainage
Keywords: drainage, tread, waterfall

TKO is continuing trail rehabilitation in areas of the Gorge affected by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire. Only preregistered volunteers will be accepted, but keep an eye on registrations as cancelations can happen and spots would open until 6PM the night before the event.

We will be hiking to Wahkeena Spring via the Wahkeena Falls Trail to continue tread work on Angel’s Rest Trail.  Tread on Angel’s Rest Trail is in desperate need of sloughing, de-berming, and drainage work.  We’ve worked as far as we can from Angel’s Rest, and will now be working the other way from Wahkeena Falls.

Potential cancellation:

Because the fire-affected zone is potentially more hazardous than other sites where we work, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain, or potential ice events.  Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

Hiking information:

We will be hiking in approximately 2 MILES to Wahkeena Spring, then to where the previous parties stopped, up to an additional 1 TO 1.5 MILES, for a possible round trip total of up to SEVEN MILES. If you have questions or concerns about the hike, please contact please contact or

It’ll be a 2 hour hike up, we work from 11-2 with a lunch break, then we hike back down!

What to expect:

You should expect to hike through a fire-affected zone over uneven terrain. Our worksite has decent sun exposure. A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins.

What to bring:

Bring your lunch, snacks and plenty of water.

An extra set of clothes to change into at the end of the day is a good idea, as we will be working in a potentially muddy area.

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)

  • Sturdy work gloves (more than one pair is a good idea)

  • Long sleeved shirts and long pants required (no shorts or leggings)

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)

  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Directions to the worksite will be provided to registered volunteers no later than 48 hours prior to the work party date, along with any other necessary information.
