Upper Larch Mt Trail Party

July 29 at 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Crew Leader:  Tom Lovett
Hike Distance:  Up to 6 miles
Elevation Gain: up to 1000’
Hike Difficulty:
Work Difficulty: Easy
Work Description: Restoration of tread and improve drainage
Keywords: drainage, tread

Overview:  For the first time since the Eagle Creek Fire the road is now open to the upper Larch Mountain Trailhead. This section of the trail was not damaged by the fire but it is covered with debris, and many drainage features are clogged.

Project description: We have been working on the Larch Mountain Trail to clear debris from the trail and clear out drainages that have become clogged.  We started at the trailhead and are working our way north down the trail, with plans to eventually meet up where other crews have worked southward from Multnomah Falls.  For this trail party we will meet on the side of Larch Mountain Rd & Trail 441 connector at the access gate (Look for the car on the left side of the road with the Trailkeepers sign). After a safety briefing and tool talk, we will hike to where we left off at the previous trail party and keep working our way down the trail to remove debris from the tread, improve eroded sections, and improve drainage.

Hiking information: We will start work where the previous trail party left off and work our way north.  Total hiking distance will depend on the amount of trail we are able to clear, but should not exceed 6 miles.

What to expect: You should expect to participate in this work party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please to not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

What to bring: Bring your lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.

What to wear:

  • Boots (Please wear something sturdy that will protect your toes from sharp tools. No tennis shoes allowed!)

  • Work gloves (loaner gloves available)

  • Long sleeved shirts and pants.

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Directions: From East or West, take I-84 to Exit 22 to Corbett. Take Corbett Hill Rd 1.4 mi to Historic Columbia River Hwy. Turn left on Historic Columbia River Hwy. After 1.9 mi take slight right onto Larch Mountain Rd. Follow Larch Mountain Rd approx 11 miles (3 miles before the road ends at the trailhead parking lot) and you will see my car on the side of the road next to the access gate with a Trailkeepers sign.
