TKO is actively working with OPRD and Friends of Tryon @ Tryon Creek Natural Area. Experienced volunteers have scouted selected trails and have made plans for stewardship events in needed areas. Only preregistered volunteers will be accepted at the day of the workparty, but keep an eye on registrations as cancelations can happen and spots would open until 6PM the night before the event.
The crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.
We will be working on the North Creek Trail in the Tryon Creek Natural Area. Our objective for the day will be doing some basic trail tread restoration, brushing and creating some better drainage in certain spots.
We will be working through a section of the North Creek Trail, starting at the end and working our way back. Depending on how much material needs to be brought to and from the site, you may be hiking up to 3 miles. Fairly easy hike.
A map of the trails can be downloaded by clicking HERE if you’re interested in taking a look ahead of time.
What to expect:
We will have a safety and tool talk in the morning before we head out on trail. We may be hiking materials such as gravel and debris to and from the work site. Expect a short hike into the work area (15-20 minutes) and then nothing too strenuous as far as work goes at the site using a variety of materials & hand tools. Plan to eat lunch on the trail.
What to bring:
Bring your lunch, snacks and plenty of water. An extra set of clothes to change into at the end of the day is a good idea, as we will be working in a potentially muddy areas.
What to wear:
Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)
Sturdy work gloves (more than one pair is a good idea)
Long sleeved shirts and long pants required
Rain gear as appropriate for the weather
Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)
TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses
From the east or west, take I-5 to Terwilliger Blvd.
Head east on Terwilliger Blvd. until you reach the Tryon Creek Natural Area entrance (on the right).
Find parking near the Nature Center. We will meet at the observatory deck between 8:00-8:30am.
