CANCELLED – Trail 400 East of Ainsworth – Donate Life Event

September 14, 2019 at 8:30 am - 3:00 pm

Crew Leader:  Kim K.
Hike Distance: 1 – 3 miles
Elevation Gain: 100′
Hike Difficulty: Easy
Work Difficulty: Moderate
Work Description: brushing and grubbing of final tread to prepare for public opening

TKO is continuing trail rehabilitation in areas of the Gorge affected by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire.  Experienced volunteers have scouted selected trails that have been deemed safe enough for passage, and have made plans for stewardship events on fire-affected trails.

Potential cancellation:

Because the fire-affected zone is potentially more hazardous than other sites where we work, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain, or potential ice events.  Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

Project description:

We will be working on a section of Trail 400 just east of Ainsworth Campground. This section has been unmaintained for many years, creating a gap in the once-continous trail 400. We will be working to reestablish and in some places reroute the trail. We are currently in the “finishing” stage of new trail building and will be using a variety of tools to do tread work.

Hiking information:

We will be gradually working our way through a section of Gorge Trail 400. Depending on how much work has been accomplished at previous work parties, you may be hiking up to 3 miles (round trip). If you have questions or concerns about the hike, please contact volunteers@trailkeepersoforegon.org

What to expect:

You should expect to work in a fire-affected zone over uneven terrain, with many obstacles to climb over and/or remove. While the area we will be working has been approved for volunteers to enter it is still relatively hazardous so soon after the fire. This work party will involve strenous work using a variety of tools. No experience is required and TKO will provide instructions on proper tool use. A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins.

What to bring:

Bring your lunch, snacks and plenty of water.

An extra set of clothes to change into at the end of the day is a good idea, as we will be working in a sooty, potentially muddy area.

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)

  • Sturdy work gloves (more than one pair is a good idea)

  • Long pants (no tights or shorts)

  • Long sleeved shirts highly recommended

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)

  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses if needed

  • Make sure to wear pants and shirts that you do not mind getting dirty or damaged

Directions to the worksite will be provided to registered volunteers no later than 48 hours prior to the work party date, along with any other necessary information.
