CANCELLED: Trail 400 Ainsworth Switchback – Retaining Walls

December 18, 2018 at 8:00 am - 3:00 pm

TKO is continuing trail rehabilitation in areas of the Gorge affected by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire.  Experienced volunteers have scouted selected trails that have been deemed safe enough for passage, and have made plans for stewardship events on fire-affected trails. Only preregistered volunteers will be accepted into the closed areas within the fire-affected trails, but keep an eye on registrations as cancelations can happen and spots would open until 6PM the night before the event.

Potential cancellation:

Because the fire-affected zone is potentially more hazardous than other sites where we work, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events.  Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

Project description:

Trail leading from Ainsworth Campground to Trail 400 has been restored and a new switchback needs to be armored with rock structures.   A predominate amount of tasks to be accomplished will be shopping for suitable rock then using that rock for the switchback structures.  In our spare time, we will rebench the new reroute trail.  We will walk by any hazard trees, not working under them. This plan may change based on what’s done over the course of work parties.

Hiking information:

We will be gradually working through a section of trail connecting Ainsworth Campground to Gorge Trail 400. You will be hiking less than 1/2- mile from parking. If you have questions or concerns about the hike, please contact guy.hamblen@trailkeepersoforegon.org

What to expect:

You should expect to work in a fire-affected zone over uneven terrain, with many obstacles to climb over and/or remove. While the area we will be working has been approved for volunteers to enter it is still relatively hazardous so soon after the fire.   A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins.

What to bring:

Bring your lunch, snacks and plenty of water. An extra set of clothes to change into at the end of the day is a good idea, as we will be working in a sooty, potentially muddy area.

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)

  • Sturdy work gloves (more than one pair is a good idea)

  • Long sleeved shirts and long pants required

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)

  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Take I-84 E/US-30 East to exit 35 from I-84 E/US-30 E.  At the stop sign, make a right west to Ainsworth Campground.  The campground is closed, so parking is available at gate to campground. From Hood River, take exit 35 toward Historic Hwy/Ainsworth State Park.
