TKO/Great Old Broads for Wilderness Trail Party

April 9 at 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Free

This is to confirm that you’ve been registered for TKO’s event for the Great Old Broads for Wilderness.  Thank you for coming out to join us for a few hours of fun while we improve trail damaged by the 2017 Eagle Creek fire.

This shortened trail party will work on a section of Trail 400 that has not seen maintenance for many years.  We’ll be using grubbing tools and loppers to make the trail passable again in preparation for its reopening later this year.

We’ll meet at the John B. Yeon trailhead at 8:30 on Tuesday, April 9, and will then take as few cars as possible to our parking area, about a half mile down the paved bike path.  We’ll park and hold our safety briefing, and then walk about a quarter mile along flat, paved trail with our tools to our work site. We will work along a section of trail that climbs very slightly, starting at road level and getting as far as is practical during the alloted time.  Tasks will involve scraping away vegitation, rocks and woody debris to expose the trail, as well as using loppers to trim back encroaching vegitation.

Neither the hike in or the work should be difficult, however, we’ll be working in an area that may have loose rock or blackberry vines in the trail; consequently tripping will be the largest potential hazard.

Due to safety concerns, we cannot accommodate late arrivals or early departures.  Please plan on being present for the entire time.

What to bring:

Bring snacks and plenty of water.

An extra set of clothes to change into at the end of the day is a good idea, as we will be working in a sooty, potentially muddy area.

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)

  • Sturdy work gloves (more than one pair is a good idea)

  • Long sleeved shirts required

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)

  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Directions:

Drive I-84 east to Exit 35 for the Historic Highway, Ainsworth State Park, Dodson and Warrendale. After 0.1 mile, turn left for Dodson, Warrendale and Hood River. In another 0.1 miles, make a right turn onto NE Frontage Road for Dodson. Drive 2.1 miles on Frontage Road and then pull into parking on the right for John B. Yeon State Park.

Please contact me if you can’t make it for one reason or another.  Thank you, and looking forward to seeing you on the 9th!
