Work Description:  Removing debris from trails, brushing

Oxbow Regional Park is a 1000-acre park located east of Gresham along the nationally designated Wild and Scenic Sandy River. The southern portion of the park is developed, with trails, campgrounds, picnic areas, and river access. There are 12 miles of trails with gentle grades along the river’s terraces and steeper trails up a ridge between the river’s bends, exploring one of the closest old-growth forests to Portland.

Project description:

This beautiful setting will be the site of TKO’s next Family Friendly event.  This trail party, geared specifically for children and their families, will perform general trail maintenance and will decommision social trails, as time and energy permit.  Come bring the whole family for this fun-filled morning of learning about trail stewardship!

Hiking information:

All work is a short hike from the parking area. It is flat, with minimal hiking required.

What to expect:

This family-friendly event is aimed at youngsters 6 – 12 years of age and their families.  As such, the work party will be considerably shorter than our normal events, running from 9:00 to noon.

Some of the work may be done by hand, such as pulling out encroaching plants, some of which may have thorns.  It is therefore a good idea for everyone participating to bring good-fitting gloves that are up to the task. TKO has loaner gloves available. We work rain or shine, so multiple layers and spare gloves may come in handy, and a change of clothes for the ride back home may make the trip more comfortable.

Minors will need to be accompanied by at least one legal guardian at all times.

Participants must arrive on time to participate in the pre-work safety talk.  We will not be able to accommodate late arrivals who miss the safety discussion.

Potential cancellation:

We will not work in high winds, excessive rain, or lightning stoms. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the morning of the event in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

What to bring:

  • Plenty of water
  • Snacks
  • Heavy, well-fitting gloves

What to wear:

  • Sturdy boots or shoes that will protect your toes. No tennis shoes or shoes without toe coverings will be allowed.
  • Work gloves
  • Long sleeved shirts and pants.
  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather
