Silver Falls State Park – Maple Ridge Retaining Wall/Gabions

November 12 at 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Free

Crew Leader: Arthur M.
Hike Distance: 1 mile round trip
Elevation Gain: 400′
Hike Difficulty: moderate
Work Difficulty: Moderate
Work Description: Building a retaining wall with gabions

We will be working on the Maple ridge trail building a retaining wall to stablize the trail from a user trail and slide area. The retaining wall will be constucted with gabions in a stacked fashion.

Other considerations:
Parking at the trailhead is limited, so we will be carpooling from the south falls parking lot that has more spaces availavble. We will meet at the South fall enterance parking lot GPS 44 52′ 40.15″ N 122 39′ 17.68″ W . This is a very active trail, so expect lots of hikers. Because of this, we will not leave a partial project uncompleted, but rather will schedule as many days as required to complete the work that is needed. As always, the crew leader may decide to cancel the trail party the day before based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipate cancelation of the work party.

Project description:
We will meet at 8:15 AM for car pooling and do the safety and tool talk at the jup off point. The trail is being eroded by a user trail down to the the other lower portion of the trail . We will be building a retaining wall using gabions. .

Hiking information:
The trail from the start point is fairly flat with very slight up grade before heading down to the switchback that is were the problem is occuring. The ranger will have stageed the materials we will be using for the wall close to the work site.

What to expect:
This is a well-established graveled trail that has lots of visitors. We will be constructing a retaining wall to stablize the tread using gabions in a stacked configurations and one set at the bottom of the affected area.
