This is the first TKO trail party at the very popular Silver Falls State Park, about 15 miles from Silverton. Our first project will be to improve drainage on the short, graveled Winter Falls trail. This trail goes past Winter Falls, then crosses a bridge to connect with other canyon trails.
Parking at the trailhead is limited, so we will be carpooling from a site that has more spaces. Information about the meeting place will be provided 48 hours prior to the trail party. This is a very active trail, so expect lots of hikers. Because of this, we will not leave a partial project uncompleted, but rather will schedule as many days as required to complete the work that is needed. As always, the crew leader may decide to cancel the trail party the day before based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated trail party cancellations.
We will meet at 8:15 AM for a safety and tool talk and then begin our project. The biggest challenge on this trail is drainage. We will be addressing drainage issues, including removing some old culverts and perhaps replacing them with new ones. We will generally be creating new opportunities for water to be directed water off of the tread surface.
The trail goes downhill 0.5 miles to the bridge. Total round-trip distance is 1 mile.
What to expect:
This is a well-established graveled trail that has lots of visitors. The tread surface is rocky, and establishing new, improved drainages will be a challenge. We will be working with hand tools, including hoes, hand saws and loppers.
A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins.
What to Bring:
What to wear:
TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses.
