Punchbowl Falls Trail Party

June 29 at 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Free

Crew Leader: Chip A.
Hike Distance: 1/4 mile
Elevation Gain: 0
Hike Difficulty: Easy
Work Difficulty: Hard
Work Description: Building new trail in rugged terrain.
Keywords: Punchbowl Falls, trail building, river, garden gnome.

The East Fork trail we are building at Punchbowl Falls County Park in the Hood River Valley will challenge your assumptions about what works when blazing new trail in steep terrain. Join us and expand your mind.

Constructing new trail often summons skills beyond the ones needed for maintaining existing trail. A surface layer of brush can hide a lot and require quick adjustments in trail alignment and technique once it is removed. Uncover a massive boulder? — move the trail uphill; discover a 10-foot drop off? — build a rock armored tread; come across a seam of sticky clay? – dig it out and backfill. All three at the same spot? — well … how about moving on and let the next person deal with it?

The site involves only a short walk and is pleasantly cool on a hot day. The adjacent river hums along and the giant cedars supply shade.

Punchbowl Falls is a gem of a park. Within its boundaries are two waterfalls, basalt cliffs surrounding a deep pool, two muscular rivers, bald eagles, and spawning salmon.

Spend a Saturday helping create this special community trail. Your brain and body will thank you.
