[POSTPONED] Oregon Coast Trail Party – Cascade Head (overnight lodging available)

March 20 at 9:00 am - 3:30 pm

Free

Crew Leader: Elaine K. Pat K.
Hike Distance: 1-1.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 400′
Hike Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Work Difficulty: Moderate
Work Description: New trail construction
Keywords: tread, restoration

Come join Trailkeepers of Oregon as we begin work on the closed section of the Oregon Coast Trail at Cascade Head! A 2.3 mile section of trail at Cascade Head (part of the Oregon Coast Trail) has been closed for 11 years following major storm damage. Efforts to reopen this section are ramping up and TKO is happy to help! With your help we’ll be doing tread restoration, log removal, drainage repair and more as we help the Forest Service get this trail back in shape.

Project description:  We havea the option of doing a variety of projects on this trail.  Decisions will be made by the crew leader based on weather, registation numbers, and other factors.  Possible projects include continuing development of a 500′ new trail segment at the upper trailhead; brushing and bringing tread up to standards; repairing a large hole in the trail where a root ball took out a portion of the trail; completing work on root ball damage on the lower section of the trail.

What to expect: Depending on the project, we may be working a short distance from the trailhead or hiking up to 2 miles round trip.  If we work in the interior of the trail, we will probably hike down to the lower trailhead and carpool up to the upper meeting point, to avoid having to hike back uphill at the end of the work day.

No experience is necessary — you’ll be working with experienced crew leaders who will teach you all you need to know. We will work in moderate rain, but will cancel or leave if weather becomes unsafe or impedes our ability to do quality work.

What to bring:
• Plenty of water
• Snacks
• Lunch

What to wear:

• Boots (Please wear something sturdy that will protect your toes from sharp tools. Tennis shoes are not recommended.)
• Work gloves (loaner gloves available)
• Long sleeved shirts and pants.
• Rain gear as appropriate for the weather
• TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Housing:

There will be housing available at the FS Bunkhouse in Hebo, about 15 miles north of our worksite.
