The Vortex Trail at McIver State Park has been minimally maintained over the last few years. There is quite a bit of tread creep which has narrowed the trail, and there are several sections on this steep trail that can use improvement to make hiking easier. We will be working to improve this trail within its existing parameters, without making major realignments to the existing tread surface. Vortex will connect to the new section of trail recently completed by TKO and the Viewpoint Trail, completed in 2017.
Hiking information: The Vortex trail is less than a mile in length and is steep in sections. Because of the proximity of the lower end of this trail to a gravel road, which we can access from the trailhead through a locked gate, we will be able to park close to the starting point, minimizing the hiking time and distance.
What to expect: You should expect to work on an existing trail surfaces in steep terrain. You may have opportunities to work with specialty tools such as a rope puller, as needed to do the work . You will work with experienced crew leaders. No experience is necessary.
What to bring: Bring your lunch and plenty of water. Also bring good work gloves and supportive boots.
What to wear:
– Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)
– Long sleeved shirts recommended
– Rain gear as appropriate for the weather
– Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)
– TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses
