Work Party Location: Milo McIver State Park, Estacada
Date: February 5, 2019
Overview: McIver State Park, located on the Clackamas River between Oregon City and Estacada, is a 950-acre park with camping, boating, hiking and horseback riding opportunities for its visitors. There are over 14 miles of trails for hikers and horseback riders in the park.
A new trail is being constructed in the lower section of the park. This ½ mile trail will connect the new Viewpoint trail with the older Vortex trail, and will allow hikers and trail runners to make a loop to and from the top section of the park. Currently, these hikers must walk about half a mile on a gravel road to do this loop. This new trail, which meanders through forest and then opens to a nice view of the Clackamas River and Mt. Hood, will provide a new option for park visitors.
TKO volunteers have been working on this trail since mid-November. The entire length of preliminary tread is defined, and now work is being done to improve and finish the final walking surface.
Hiking information: The trail is flat and close to the gravel road, so very little hiking is necessary to get to the work areas. Because of the proximity to the gravel road, which we can access through a locked gate, we are able to move vehicles and tools along as we work, minimizing the hike and hiking time.
What to expect:
You should expect to work on partially developed trail surfaces in a flat, wooded area. You may have opportunities to work with specialty tools such as a rope puller, to remove root balls from the tread surface. You will work with experienced crew leaders. No experience is necessary..
