NEW LOCATION: Horsetail Falls Trail Party (was Larch Mt)

September 30, 2019 at 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Free

Crew Leader:  Tom L.
Hike Distance:  Under 1 mile
Elevation Gain: up to 200’
Hike Difficulty:
Easy
Work Difficulty: Moderate
Work Description: Restoration of tread, building rock structures to support tread, brushing
Keywords: rock work, tread

Overview:  Due to poor conditions on the access road to Larch Mt Trail we have shifted work to the Horsetail Falls trail.  We will be improving the tread on the lower sections of the Horsetail Falls trail by building small rock walls, filling eroded sections, and removing trip hazards in the tread.

Project description: This section of the trail is very rough, with many exposed rocks and large roots. We will be building small rock walls and filling behind them to bring the tread above exposed roots, and removing large trip hazard rocks in the trail to re-establish a smooth tread.

Hiking information: We will be working within the first 1/4 mile of the trail.

What to expect: You should expect to participate in this work party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please to not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

What to bring: Bring your lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.

What to wear:

  • Boots (Please wear something sturdy that will protect your toes from sharp tools. No tennis shoes allowed!)

  • Work gloves (loaner gloves available)

  • Long sleeved shirts and pants.

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

Directions:

From Portland, OR travel west on Interstate 84 to exit #35, Ainsworth Campground.  Follow the exit loop to a stopsign and Old Hwy US 30.  Turn left.  Horsetail Falls is approximately 1.3 miles with parking on the right (north) side of the road.

There are no bathrooms at this parking area.  There is a bathroom on the left side of the road about 0.5 miles before the trailhead.
