Help layout a new trail in the Juniper Hills Nature Preserve.  This is the start of a new trail network done as a partnership with The Nature Conservancy.

https://www.nature.org/en-us/get-involved/how-to-help/places-we-protect/juniper-hills/

This limited attendance event is for those who have done trail work and want to get more experience in desert trail layout.  Those with experience in new trail design are welcome as this is a discussion class where we will share what we know.  Please contact the crew leader if unsure if this event is for you.

We will be laying out the trail for a new trail construction event in June.  This involves:

  • Evaluating best trail location for hikers

  • Placing trail for optimal sustainability and minimal impact on the environment

  • Planning on construction needed for grade and soil types

The area is high desert sage and juniper with clay ash soils that can vary between very soft when wet to rock hard when dry.  This is a particularly scenic area in a nature preserve where we want to provide access with minimal impact on the views and environment.

Juniper Hills feature some unique and spectacular geology and ecology. We will be building a hiking trail to a beautiful range of painted hills.  Trail construction will be in mid-June. If you’re interested in continuing to help with the project, you can register for the next event (multi-day) here – https://www.trailkeepersoforegon.org/events/juniper-hills-volunteer-vacation/

What to bring:

  • Hiking gear for working where there is no trail

  • Snacks and Lunch

  • Water bottle for during the day

What to wear:

  • Hiking Boots. Please wear something sturdy that will protect feet when walking off trail on rugged terrain, there is no trail! Tennis shoes are not recommended! Open-toed shoes will not be allowed.

  • Long-sleeved shirts and pants

  • Rain gear just in case

Instructions and teaching about building desert trails provided by Trail Keepers of Oregon.

Directions: 26 miles East of Prineville Oregon on Hwy 380 (Paulina Hwy). Three to four hour drive from Portland, 1 hour from Bend. Detailed directions will be provided via email to those that sign up.

Please contact the crew leader, curtis.smith@trailkeepersoforegon.org, if you have questions. Please don’t take a spot from someone who wants the learning experience just because you want to hike the area.  There will be other opportunities to hike the area, especially after we build the trail.  This is a working event.
