Gorge Trail #400 McCord Creek Trail Party – Tread Restoration

May 17 at 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Free

This section of the #400 trail begins on the east side of McCord Creek and heads east. This trail was impacted by the Eagle Creek fire and the 18-month closure as well as the recent February storms. The tread has a lot of vegetation and duff growing on it that needs removal.  This is a very rocky path.

Time: We will meet in the John B. Yeon parking lot at 8:15 AM, carpool to the trailhead and have a safety and tool talk before starting on our work. We plan to be back to the cars by 3:00 PM.

Hiking information: We will start from the paved bike path and work our way up the trail. Total distance will depend on the amount of time it takes to do the required work. Total distance will not exceed 1.5 miles.  The trail elevation in this section is less than 100′ over the length of trail but travels across a couple of rocky scree slopes and the trail tread itself is cut through rocky soils.

What to expect: You should expect to work on a trail that has been impacted by the Eagle Creek fire and a year of closure. There are rocks and a great amount of vegetation on the trail. The trail tread itself is cut through very rocky soil.  We will be removing the duff and vegetation from the rocky tread to expose the trail again.  Most of the vegetation is low growing plants on the trail.  There will be very little other vegetation to be cut on this section of trail.  The trail is also close to the freeway so it can be quite noisy.  Some poison oak can be found growing to the sides of the trail tread in this area.

You should expect to participate in this work party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Potential Cancellation: Because the fire-affected zone is potentially more hazardous than other sites where we work, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

What to bring: Bring your lunch and plenty of water.  Also bring good work gloves and supportive boots.

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)

  • Long sleeved shirts recommended

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)

  • TKO will supply hard hats

Directions: Take I-84 E/US-30 East to exit 35 from I-84 E/US-30 E.  At the stop sign, make a left east then in 100 yds a right onto the Frontage Rd.  Approx. 2.1 miles east, stop at the John B. Yeon trailhead parking.  Don’t get back onto I-84.

Please consider indicating an interest in carpooling when you register, or carpooling with someone you know. Parking spaces are limited.
