Gorge Trail #400 – McCord Trail Party

June 5 at 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Free

Trail 400 from McCord Creek Trail TBD

This section of the 400 trail begins on the west side of McCord Creek and heads east. We will be repairing tread on the main trail. There are many rocks and tree debris to be moved from the tread for crew safety. We could be working on the Overlook trail or working on the trail 400 section east towards Tanner Creek. There is some poison oak on this trail. We pass by three bald eagle nests on this trail. It’s a joy to see them in flight.

Crew Leader: Glen Hess
Hike Distance: 1-2 miles
Elevation Gain: 50ft
Hike Difficulty: Easy
Work Difficulty: Hard
Work Description: Grubbing out tread on existing trail. Pulling weeds on a unused trail.
Keywords: Ainsworth State Park, trail tread restoration.

Time: We will meet at the trailhead at 8:15 AM, have a safety and tool talk, and get started on our work. We will carpool along the bike path to near the Moffett Creek crossing. We plan to be back to the cars by 3:00 PM.

Hiking information: We will start from the paved bike path and hike to the project site. Total distance will not exceed 1 mile.

What to expect: You should expect to work on a trail that has been impacted by the Eagle Creek fire and 18 months of closure. There are rocks and slide material on the trail. It is very close to the freeway so is quite noisy.

You should expect to participate in this work party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Potential Cancellation: Because the fire-affected zone is potentially more hazardous than other sites where we work, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, or excessive rain/heat. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

What to bring: Bring your lunch and plenty of water.  Also bring good work gloves and supportive boots.

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)

  • Long sleeved shirts recommended

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)

  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Directions: Take I-84 E/US-30 East to exit 35 from I-84 E/US-30 E.  At the stop sign, make a left east then in 100 yds a right onto the Frontage Rd.  Approx. 2.1 miles east, stop at the John B. Yeon trailhead parking.  Don’t get back onto I-84.

Please consider indicating an interest in carpooling when you register, or carpooling with someone you know. Parking spaces are limited.
