Franklin Ridge Trail Party

August 31 at 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Free

Crew Leader:  Riley M.
Hike Distance:  Up to 6 miles roundtrip
Elevation Change: up to 2000’
Hike Difficulty: Moderate
Work Difficulty: High Complexity
Work Description: Full trail recovery, brushing and tread

For the first time since the Eagle Creek fire, TKO will be back to Franklin Ridge #427 – still closed since the fire. Significant damage has surmounted to nearly rebuilding the trail altogether. TKO is continuing trail rehabilitation in areas of the Gorge affected by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire.  Experienced volunteers have scouted selected trails that have been deemed safe enough for passage, and have made plans for stewardship events on fire-affected trails. Only pre registered volunteers will be accepted into the closed areas within the fire-affected trails, but keep an eye on registrations as cancelations can happen and spots would open until 6PM the night before the event.

Potential cancellation:   Because the fire-affected zone is potentially more hazardous than other sites where we work, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events.  Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

Project description: We will be working in partnership with the Forest Service trail crew to identify priorities to bring this trail back to life – bucking out down trees, clearing brush from the flagged corridor and then restoring tread and drainage features.

Hiking information: We will start work where the previous trail parties left off and work our way north.  Total hiking distance will depend on the amount of trail we are able to clear, but should not exceed 6 miles.

What to expect:  A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins. You should expect to be in a fire-affected zone over uneven terrain, with many obstacles yet to climb over enroute to the project site. While the area we will be in has been approved for volunteers to enter, it is still relatively hazardous so soon after the fire. You should expect to participate in this trail party for its entirety and for safety reasons, please do not arrive late.

What to bring: 10 essentials plus a lunch, snacks, and plenty of water (recommend 2-3 liters).

What to wear:

  • Boots (Please wear something sturdy that will protect your toes from sharp tools. No tennis shoes allowed!)

  • Work gloves (loaner gloves available)

  • Long sleeved shirts and pants.

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Directions: From East or West, take I-84 to Exit 22 to Corbett. Take Corbett Hill Rd 1.4 mi to Historic Columbia River Hwy. Turn left on Historic Columbia River Hwy. After 1.9 mi take slight right onto Larch Mountain Rd. Follow Larch Mountain Rd approx 11 miles (3 miles before the road ends at the trailhead parking lot) and you will see TKO crew leaders at the access gate with a Trailkeepers sign.
