July 17 at 8:30 am - 3:00 pm

Free

Crew Leader:  Brian Emery
Hike Distance: 2 miles
Elevation Gain: 100′
Hike Difficulty: Easy
Work Difficulty: Moderate
Work Description: brushing and grubbing of final tread to prepare for public opening

Trail #400 and Upper McCord trails are experience major vegetation growth, being opened up by the Eagle Creek fire. Brushing of the trail corridor and follow up tread work is needed.

Potential cancellation: This work site does experience heavy gorge winds and is in the Fire Closure area, the crew leader may decide to cancel the trail party the day before based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated trail party cancellations.

Project description:
We will meet in the parking lot at 8:15 AM for a safety and tool talk and hike to the project site. In general, our focus will be the final completion and polish of the tread to prepare the trail to be opened to the public. The trail has been idle for the last year and vegetation has grown over the tread.

Hiking information: We will meet at Yeon Trailhead and then caravan to project site. Hike through the mile-long trail working on the tread as we go. The round-trip distance is about 2-3 miles, depending on how far along we get.

What to expect: This is a closed trail in the Fire Closure area. This is a wind-sheltered area so we will not directly be in any Gorge winds. There may be tripping hazards present off the trail. It may be cold, rainy, and windy so be sure to bring extra clothes, windbreakers, an extra set of gloves, and rain gear for inclement weather. A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins.

What to Bring:

  • Plenty of water

  • Snacks

  • Extra gloves if you have them

  • Safety glasses if you have them
