Trailkeepers is starting a new trail project in the Chahalem Ridge Nature Park https://www.oregonmetro.gov/chehalem-ridge-nature-park. This work party will be flagging where the Christensen Creek trail will go. This is a small work party, only a few spots are available.
Potential cancellation: The area is not cleared for trail use and there is normal forest debris in the work area. High winds would increase the chance of falling limbs. The crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds or potential ice events. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations. We will NOT cancel due to rain, we are going to get wet anyway.
Project description: We will survey the proposed trail location, clearing enough brush so we can determine the best location, and flag the route. The area has been scouted and a rough idea of the trail location is marked. We will not be building trail tread in this work party, that will be done in a future work party.
Hiking information: This is not so much a hike as slowly making our way through sometimes dense brush including thick blackberry. We will cut back enough brush to make our way through. The trail is intended to be an easy beginner trail so we will be avoiding steep areas.
The trail location is behind a locked gate with a 1 mile drive to the work location. If you arrive late you will not be able to join the work party.
What to expect: A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins. This work party has difficulties not usually encountered in tail maintenance as there is no trail, yet. We will be working in brush and there is blackberry that we will have to cut our way through – be prepared for thorns! Work includes climbing over slick logs, using hand saws and loppers to make your way through obstacles, and hidden hazards under the brush. Also be prepared to learn about trail placement and be involved in a new trail from the start!
What to bring: Lunch, snacks, water, and a day pack to carry it all in.
