TKO has been invited to fix some long-term drainage, retaining walls, and repair trail tread at the Bridal Veil Falls State Park on the trail leading to the falls. There will be some stone work to tackle as well as user trail decommissioning and culvert work to be done among other projects.
Potential cancellation: This work site does experience heavy gorge winds, the crew leader may decide to cancel the trail party the day before based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated trail party cancellations.
We will meet in the parking lot at 8:15 AM for a safety and tool talk and then begin our project. In general, our focus will be the restoration of tread leading to the falls. There are some large branches to be removed and a couple of user trails to be de-commissioned as well as drainage mitigation to install and a culvert to be cleaned out. There is also a need to make tread improvements by returning existing gravel to the trail to mitigate water ponding. There are also some stones that were used to crib the trail edge that have failed and slide down the slope. These stones are mortored together and will need to be broken apart and recovered for future resetting to the trail edge. There are a variety of activities to be performed on this trail.
Hiking information: We can park in the State Park parking lot and hike through the ¼ mile long project site. Segments of this trail have steep dropoffs but these won’t be a factor until the various projects begin.
What to expect: We will be working a mostly graveled trail that is open to the public during this party. We will be making improvements off to either side of the trail in some areas that will be on steep side slopes in rough terrain. There may be tripping hazards present off the trail. We will need to monitor for hikers through the work area. It may be cold and windy so be sure to bring extra clothes, windbreakers, an extra set of gloves, and rain gear for inclement weather. A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins.
