Bridal Veil Falls – Rock Water Bar Installs

March 12 at 8:00 am - 3:00 pm

Crew Leader:  Guy Hamblen

Overview:  TKO has been invited to fix some long-term drainage, retaining walls, and repair/replace/add some new timber box steps near the landing area at Bridal Veil Falls State Park. Our first project will be to mitigate storm water drainage that is currently flowing over the existing box steps by building some large rock water bars to re-direct water off the trail. Only preregistered volunteers will be accepted for these projects, but keep an eye on registrations as cancelations can happen and spots would open until 6PM the night before the event.

Potential cancellation:  This work site does experience heavy gorge winds, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events.  Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

Project description:  In general, our focus will be the construction of some large rock water bars to divert heavy storm rain water off the trail area. We will be moving, staging, and placing very large rocks. There are a number of suitable rocks near the work area. We will be following USFS and PCTA Water Bars and Checks (read here) specifications. We will walk by any hazard trees, not working under them. This plan may change based on what’s done over the course of work parties.

Hiking information:  We can park at the State Park parking lot and hike the ¼ mile to the worksite. Segments of this trail have sections with steep dropoffs.  If you have questions or concerns about the hike, please contact guy.hamblen@trailkeepersoforegon.org or volunteer@trailkeepersoforegon.org.

What to expect:  We will be working in a relatively steep but treed location just above the landing area viewpoint. There are a number of large, exposed tree roots that create an uneven terrain and can be a tripping hazard. We will have to monitor for hikers below the work area. It may be cold and windy so be sure to bring extra clothes, windbreakers, an extra set of gloves, and rain gear for inclement weather. A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins.

What to bring: Bring your lunch, snacks and plenty of water. An extra set of clothes to change into at the end of the day is a good idea, as we will be working in a potentially muddy area.

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)

  • Sturdy work gloves (more than one pair is a good idea)

  • Long sleeved shirts and long pants required

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)

  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Directions:  Take I-84 East to Bridal Veil exit 28 from I-84. Follow the exit road to the Historic Columbia River Hwy US30. At the stop sign, make a right turn and go west past Angel’s Rest TH for approx. 0.8 miles. Bridal Veil State Park will be on the right, north side of the highway.
