Part of TKO’s growing portfolio of trainings, TKO TImber School – Box Stairs Lab is a chance for participants to dig in on how best to install stairs and steps with dimensional lumber. Metro has identified a number of areas throughout the park where timber box steps should be installed, beginning with two access points descending to the Sandy River. TKO, Metro and Oxbow staff are joining to discuss how to plan, build and install box steps so that TKO volunteers can move the effort forward throughout the upcoming winter months. Senior Crew Leader and Project Manager Guy Hamblen will teach attendees how to tackle this daunting task from start to finish, beginning with calculating materials needed, area and material prep, and proceeding to box step building and installation.
There will be two identical sessions, one on Wednesday 12/4 (attended by Oxbow staff) the other on Wednesday, 12/11 (with Metro staff). Please only sign up for one of these training sessions, not both!
The first part of the day will be held in the Oxbow Welcome Center starting promptly at 8:00 and will consist in classroom training – learning techniques and best-practices for building box steps – followed by materials prep at the Oxbow equipment yard, and initial installation of several steps. After a break for lunch, TKO volunteers will continue with worksite area prep at the river.
Note: The area is awash in trailing blackberry, salmonberry and stinging nettles. Please bring good gloves and safety glasses, if you have them. Also, the trail can get very muddy, even on dry days, so please be prepared; bring clothes you can get dirty, and something to change into afterwards. We’ll be working at the river, rain or shine, so be sure to bring warm layers.
You do not need to pay for parking; a free parking pass will be provided the day of the event.
There is very limited cell phone reception within the park. We’ll be relying on park radios should an emergency arise.
