TKO recognizes that we are navigating health safety challenges we have never seen before.  With guidance from safety experts, medical ADVISORS and RECOMMENDATIONS from our land manager partners, we are engaging in limited in-person volunteer activities with a keen eye towards safe, healthy practices.

Angel’s Rest Trail ReRoute Cut-In

August 12, 2019 at 8:30 am - 1:00 pm

Crew Leader:  Guy Hamblen
Hike Distance: 1/2 miles
Elevation Gain: 500
Hike Difficulty: Easy
Work Difficulty: Easy
Work Description: brushing, grubbing, log repositioning

A re-route of trail just before the Coopey Falls overlook was proposed last fall to OPRD.  Approval was obtained and now TKO, in conjunction with OPRD, will cut in this new reroute. The proposed trail has a lot of vegetation and duff growing on it that needs removal.  There will be a log to move to protect a culturally-sensitive area.

Time: We will meet in the Angel’s Rest upper parking lot at 8:00 AM for our safety and tool talk. We plan to be back to the cars by 1:00 PM.

Hiking information:   It is about a 1/2-mile hike up to the work area.  This is an open-to-the-public trail but travels across a couple of rocky scree slopes.  Total elevation gain is about 500 ft.

What to expect: You should expect to work on a trail that has been impacted by the Eagle Creek fire and a year of closure. The trail is close to the freeway so it can be quite noisy.  Some poison oak can be found growing to the sides of the trail tread in this area.  The new trail segment is complete but we will add finishing touches as needed.  There is one large log to re-locate to protect a culturally-sensitive area near Coopey Falls.  We will be working with an OPRD State Archeologist to accomplish this project.

You should expect to participate in this work party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Potential Cancellation: Because the fire-affected zone is potentially more hazardous than other sites where we work, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events. Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations.

What to bring: Bring your lunch and plenty of water.  Also bring good work gloves and supportive boots.

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes are not allowed)

  • Long sleeved shirts recommended.  Long pants are required.

  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.)

  • TKO will supply hard hats and gloves if necessary.

Directions: Take I-84 E/US-30 East to exit 28 from I-84 E/US-30 E (Bridal Veil).  Go approx 1/2 mile then west on US 30 Old Columbia River Highway for 1/8 mi. to the Upper Angel’s Rest parking lot.

The nearest restrooms are at Bridal Veil Falls or at Rooster Rock State Park on I-84.

Please consider indicating an interest in carpooling when you register, or carpooling with someone you know. Parking spaces are limited.
