Ainsworth Campground Loop Trail Party

July 3 at 8:30 am - 3:00 pm

Crew Leader:  Brian Emery
Hike Distance: 2 miles
Elevation Gain: 100′
Hike Difficulty: Easy
Work Difficulty: Moderate
Work Description: brushing and grubbing of final tread to prepare for public opening

TKO has been asked to make a final sweep of the Trail #400 that serves as a loop trail between the Ainsworth Campground and the Ainsworth Day Use area to the west.  The trail has not been treated for about a year and State Parks would like to open this loop trail to the public soon.

Potential cancellation:  This work site does experience heavy gorge winds and is in the Fire Closure area, the crew leader may decide to cancel the trail party the day before based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events.  Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated trail party cancellations.

Project description:
We will meet in the parking lot at 8:15 AM for a safety and tool talk and then begin our project.  In general, our focus will be the final completion and polish of the tread on this loop to prepare the trail to be opened to the public.  The trail has been idle for the last year and vegetation has grown over the tread.

Hiking information: We can park in the Ainsworth State Park parking lot and hike through the mile-long trail working on the tread as we go.  The round-trip distance is about 2 miles.

What to expect: This is a closed trail in the Fire Closure area.  This is a wind-sheltered area so we will not directly be in any Gorge winds.  There may be tripping hazards present off the trail.  It may be cold, rainy, and windy so be sure to bring extra clothes, windbreakers, an extra set of gloves, and rain gear for inclement weather. A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins.

What to Bring:

  • Lunch

  • Plenty of water

  • Snacks

  • Extra gloves if you have them

  • Safety glasses if you have them

  • Layered clothing

What to wear:

  • Boots (tennis shoes not allowed)

  • Sturdy work gloves (more than one pair is a good idea). Loaners are available.

  • A light, long sleeved shirt is highly recommended

  • Rain gear, rain is always likely

  • Eye protection is recommended (eye glasses, safety glasses, etc.).  Loaners are available.

  • TKO will supply hard hats as needed

Directions: Take I-84 east to Exit 35 Ainsworth CG.  Follow the exit ramp around to the Old Columbia River Hwy US30 (about 1/4 mi) and make a left turn.  Go west about 1/4 mile to the Ainsworth Campground entrance on the left.  Parking will be at the Tent parking area.  There are open restrooms in the campground.

If you have questions or concerns about the hike, please contact brian.emery@trailkeepersoforegon.org or volunteer@trailkeepersoforegon.org.
