Board Member: Our board members play a critical role in shaping the organization's overall strategic direction and guiding our volunteers to achieve annual goals and objectives. We meet six times a year to discuss the organization's work plan progress, budget and upcoming events. Board members also serve on specific committees to work on topics including outreach, trail maintenance and advocacy initiatives. They may also have specific duties as a board officer such as treasurer, secretary or president.
Volunteer Coordinator: Registration for TKO trail maintenance work parties is done through our website. The Volunteer Coordinator maintains TKO's event list and event sign up pages. They also coordinate with the work party crew leader to ensure accurate registration information and email all volunteers prior to the event so they have driving directions, carpool information and the required gear list.
Event Coordinator: Each year TKO participates in events such as the Annual Columbia Cascades Trail Skills College and the spring and fall Portlandhikers.org Meet and DEET. The Event Coordinator will recruit and coordinate board members and volunteers to represent TKO at these events and possibly take on some of the coordination for the event's logistics.
Outreach Assistant: Outreach assistants represent TKO at events to spread the word about TKO's mission and to recruit new donors and volunteers. Outreach events could include Portland Sunday Parkways, REI used gear sales, National Get Outdoors Day and National Public Lands Day to name a few. Outreach assistants should have excellent people skills and be able to transport TKO's table display to and from the events.
Crew Leaders: TKO Crew Leaders play a keystone role in our trail maintenance program. Crew Leaders are responsible for 1) Safety 2) Fun and 3) Work on each work party. Prior to the event the Crew Leader scopes out the project, coordinates with the land manager and obtains necessary tools and equipment from TKO's cache. At the event they conduct the trailhead safety talk and are responsible for supervising the entire crew. After the work party the Crew Leader files a work party summary and sends a thank you email to all the participants.
Assistant Crew Leaders: Each work party should have at least one Assistant Crew Leader who helps with tasks at the trailhead such as organizing tools, passing out hardhats and greeting volunteers. On the trail they may take a small group to tackle another project or simply be available should the Crew Leader need help in an emergency.
